Blood Pressure


 BLOOD PRESSURE

Blood is carried from the heart to all parts of your body in blood vessels called arteries. When the heart squeezes, this creates pressure on the walls of the arteries that can be measured.  Each time the heart beats, it contracts and then relaxes.  This contraction and relaxation is measured as blood pressure.
My blood pressure is 120/70. What does this mean? - Systolic Pressure - This is the top number (120) and is the measurement taken when the heart squeezes out the blood and the pressure is highest.
 - Diastolic Pressure - This is the bottom number (70) and is the pressure when the heart is resting in between squeezes.

What is normal blood pressure? - 90/60 to 130/80 is often listed as a normal range.
 - Normal for you is best defined by taking your blood pressure regularly.

How do I know if I have High Blood Pressure? - Hypertension (High Blood Pressure) is most often defined as:
            - Systolic (top number) greater than 140 and/or a
            - Diastolic (bottom number) greater than 90

Are there symptoms for High Blood Pressure? - Most of the time, there are no symptoms.  HBP is called the silent killer.
 - A couple of symptoms that may appear are:
            - Chest pain, confusion, ear noise or buzzing, irregular heartbeat
            - Nosebleeds, tiredness, vision changes, severe headaches

What happens if high blood pressure isn't treated? - High Blood Pressure increases the risk of coronary heart disease, heart attack, stroke, and kidney failure to list a few.
ACTIONS: - Check your blood pressure regularly.  Develop a home monitoring plan.
